World drums are made with one of two types of drum heads: animal skin and synthetic. Animal skin heads can change tune with varying weather conditions. Synthetic heads are not affected by weather. The drums shown below are all made with synthetic heads.
World drums are also made with three different types of heads: pre-tuned, rope-tuned, and key-tuned. The pre-tuned head drums are lightweight and inexpensive, but don't offer the ability to change their sound. Rope-tuned head drums have the ability to change sounds by tightening or loosening the ropes, which is difficult. Key-tuned drums have the ability to change sounds by simply tightening or loosening the bolts around the head.
World drum bases are usually made of wood or synthetic material. The wood bases tend to have a better sound. But, are heavier and not as easy to carry.
Below is only a small selection of World Drums.
The Pre-Tuned Buffalo drum above is available in various sizes from 8 inches side to 22 inches wide. This drum has ropes in the back so it can be held by one hand. A mallet is normally used with this drum. This is a traditional Native American drum. This drum is also available as a 16" Bahia Bass Drum in black, which produces a significantly lower bass tone.
The Pre-Tuned frame drums above are similar to the Buffalo drums, but without the holding ropes.
The Key-Tuned Djembe drum above can be played with one's hands producing 3 different sounds or with a mallet producing one sound. The Djembe drum must be held or tilted off the floor with one's knees or by a Djembe drum stand. Djembe drums are available in various sizes. Ten inch though 14 inch are the most popular.
The Key-Tuned Tubano drum above can be played with with one's hands producing 3 different sounds or with a mallet producing one sound. The Tubano is made to stand without further support. They are available in three head sizes: 10 inch, 12 inch, and 14 inch.
The Key-Tuned Conga drums above can be played with one's hands producing 3 different sounds on each drum or with a mallet producing one sound on each drum. Usually, one small and one large Conga drum are used. The Conga drums must be held or titled off the floor with one's knees or by a Conga drum stand.
The Key-Tuned Bahia Bass Drums above are played with mallets only and produce a very deep bass sound. They are available in three head sizes: 12 inch, 14 inch, and 16 inch. Each drum produces a different tone. These drums are made to stand without further support.
